Umahi Demands Autopsy To Unravel Cause Of Mary Habila's Death


The Minister of Works David Umahi, has called for a comprehensive autopsy on a staff member who died under mysterious circumstances at the residence in Ebony State.

In a letter addressed to the Nigeria Police Force, the Minister formally requested that an independent forensic examination be conducted on the remains of Miss Mary Habila before her body is released to her family.

According to the letter, signed by Chief Roy O. Umahi Nwaeze, SAN, Miss Habila, an employee of the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences, Uburu, who was on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works passed away on June 27, 2026.

The incident occurred in a building situated within the Minister’s residence at Umunaga, Uburu, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The letter emphasizes that the deceased did not reside in the same building as the Minister. Rather, the structure in question is described as being “exclusively designated for members of our Client’s staff and other persons working with him.”

On the night of her death, Miss Habila and another female physiotherapist were reportedly the only occupants of the building.

In the interest of justice and to eliminate public speculation, Senator Umahi has requested that the police conduct the autopsy “for the purpose of scientifically and independently ascertaining the actual cause and circumstances of her death.”

The letter further requests that the remains of the deceased should not be released to her next of kin, identified as Mr. Tanko Habila Wisdom of Sabon Gari, Nok, Jaba Local Government Area, Kaduna State, until the autopsy has been concluded and all necessary investigative procedures have been finalized.

The Minister’s legal representatives argued that this request is necessary to “preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation” and to ensure that the “true cause of death is conclusively determined before the remains are interred.”

‎The team, however, called for an urgent action from the police, emphasizing that the request is made in the “overall interest of justice.
