Tower Collapse: TCN Declares Force Majeure On Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Power Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a Force Majeure on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission line following the collapse of a transmission tower, which disrupted bulk electricity transmission along the corridor.

The company said the incident occurred after the transmission line tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026.

According to a statement issued by TCN management on Tuesday, a trial reclosure was attempted at 11:07 p.m., but the line tripped again, prompting the deployment of linesmen from its Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region to trace the fault.

The patrol team subsequently discovered on September 8 that Tower T367 had collapsed.

TCN said preliminary findings showed that heavy winds and rainstorms experienced in the area caused the collapse of the tower.

“The incident has affected the transmission of bulk electricity through the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission corridor.

Consequently, and in view of the natural disaster that caused the damage, TCN hereby declares Force Majeure on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line,” the company said.

TCN said it had commenced arrangements to mobilise personnel, equipment and other resources to the affected location for the rehabilitation of the collapsed tower and restoration of the transmission line.

The company, however, said it had maintained electricity supply to Sokoto through an alternative transmission route.

It explained that the Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor was now receiving supply through the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau transmission line.

TCN expressed regret over the inconvenience the incident might cause electricity consumers and other stakeholders, assuring that efforts were underway to restore normal bulk power transmission services as quickly as possible.

The company said it would continue to work to ensure the affected transmission infrastructure is rehabilitated and returned to service within the shortest possible time.
